The Grind: A preview of wildcard weekend

January 3, 2013

As I write this I’m listening to Canada get blown out by the USA in the World Junior Championship semifinals on a streaming Internet radio broadcast. It’s 6:15 in the morning. The score is 5-1. Canadian goalie Malcolm Subban, who has looked shaky all tournament, finally had his stinker of a game at the worst possible time, allowing four goals. The final buzzer just went. Following the bronze medal game, hockey fans will have to go back to convincing themselves there will be an NHL season even though it’s not happening.

The Bishop’s Gaiters women’s basketball team snapped its season-long winless streak last Sunday when it recorded a hard-fought 73-66 win over the Ryerson Rams in the final day of competition at the UQAM Citadin Holiday Festival held in Montreal.
“We needed this one,” a relieved coach Alex Perno said after the game. “It was so important to get a win heading into the second half after all the troubles we had with injuries and then losing Vero (second-year forward Veronique Fortin-Tremblay).”

In return for left-winger Turnbull, Phoenix General Manager Patrick Charbonneau gets back the fifth choice in the 2013 draft that had gone to Quebec in a deal that brought Russian forward Denis Kamaev earlier this year. Charbonneau also gets 18-year old rookie defenseman Jean-Philippe Lebrasseur.
