Chefs de Mission hand the Canada Games Committee a good report card

The chefs de mission have been hard at work. Hailing from the 13 Canadian provinces and territories, the chefs de mission took a good, long look at the Sherbrooke Canada Games venues and sites. They evaluated the organization and planning along the way on their trip to Sherbrooke, which took place from May 13 to May 16.
The first trip to Quebec to ensure the planning stage was effected in May 2012 by the chefs de mission.

A Runner's Mind: Mark Spicoluk sets the bar high musically and athletically

Mark Spicoluk is a big man in the Canadian music scene, and I don’t mean physically. The slim and athletic 33-year-old is already an industry whiz, not only as a musician, producer and writer but also for having an eye for talent when he sees it. Indeed, he’s been consumed by music ever since he can remember, notably having worked recently for Universal Music Canada and Gene Simmons’ new record label.
Amazingly, for the past 17 years he’s also followed a dedicated fitness regime.

After a delay, Opening Day finally here for Sherbrooke Expos

Spring has finally arrived in Sherbrooke, albeit five days later than scheduled, with the opening of the Sherbrooke Expos season this weekend. The Expos will open their 2013 Quebec Senior Elite Baseball League campaign on Friday night as they visit the Thetford Mines Blue Sox. First pitch against the defending league champions is set for 8 p.m.
The Expos’ home opener is set for Sunday evening, as they host the Montreal Orioles at 7 p.m. at the Amedée Roy stadium.

Sherbrooke Silent Ride braves the rain

More than 125 enthusiastic cyclists braved the rain to ride in silence through the streets of Sherbrooke, to the Marché de la Gare as part of the Ride of Silence commemorating cycling deaths. Sherbrooke municipal Councillor and Sherbrooke Transit Society President Marc Denault gave a short speech after cycling the full 10-kilometre course in the pouring rain.

Soccer chose me, I didn’t choose soccer: Simon Lemire

Sherbrooke native Simon Lemire is hard at work preparing to make it to the Sherbrooke Canada Summer Games.
Born in Sherbrooke but currently living in Montreal, 16-year-old Lemire is working with l’Académie de l’Impact de Montréal.
Soccer seems to run in his blood. Ever since the age of five years old, Lemire loves soccer.
“I didn’t choose soccer, it chose me,” says Lemire.

RSEQ, Radio-Canada announce TV schedule

Local university football fans will once again have an opportunity to follow their favourite teams on TV this coming season on Radio-Canada as RSEQ announced earlier this week that it signed a two-year agreement with the broadcaster for nationally televised games. 

Radio-Canada will provide live coast-to-coast coverage of nine regular season games as well as a pair of post-season games including the Dunsmore Cup. Live broadcasts will begin on Saturday, August 31.

More than 500 runners celebrate Mother’s Day in North Hatley

The sunny Mother’s Day weather attracted more than 500 runners to the first Mother’s Day half-marathon in North Hatley last weekend. In addition to the main 21-kilometre event, there were also 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre races, as well as a 1ikilometre children’s “fun run.” All four courses took runners on a scenic path through the streets of North Hatley and along Lake Massawippi.

Third edition of the Windsor slow pitch tourney in June

Among the various activities making up the 2013 edition of the Windsor Paper Festival is the third edition of the friendly slow pitch ball tournament that runs from June 14 to 16 next to the municipal stadium on St Georges St.
The tournament will features recreational men’s and mixed teams.

Sherbrooke Tour of Silence Wednesday night

The Sherbrooke cycling club is inviting the public to join them in the 2013 Tour de Silence, which is taking place Wednesday, May 15 simultaneously in more than 400 cities on four continents, commemorating cycling deaths during 2012.
The procession will start from the parking lot of the IGA Extra Supermarket on King Street West in Sherbrooke and will proceed in silence under police escort for approximately 10 kilometres to the Marché de la Gare. Departure time is 5:45.

Tennis camps to hold 34th edition this summer

This summer will mark the 34th edition of the Rick Pellerin Tennis Camps at Bishop’s University. As in past years Pellerin and his outstanding staff will offer bilingual Adult and Junior Tennis Camps although the 2013 schedule had to be altered a bit because of the Canada Summer Games that will take place in Sherbrooke in August.
