College Francais eliminates Champlain

Longueuil records second consecutive 4-0 shutout

The Champlain College men’s hockey team’s championship dreams were crushed Wednesday night when the Cougars suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of College Francais 4-0 in Game 7 of their best-of-seven semifinal series in Longueuil. With the victory Longueuil now advances to the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League championships against the Lachine Maroons.

Dr. Jean-Guy Ouellet to be inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame announced today the Class of 2013, including sport development architect Dr. Jean-Guy Ouellet of Sherbrooke. Rounding out the group of athletes that is being recognized with Canada’s highest sporting honour are game-changing curler Russ Howard, hockey champion Joe Sakic, versatile cycling champion Alison Sydor, five-time Paralympian André Viger and the 1992 Women’s coxless 4 rowing Olympic gold medallists Kirsten Barnes, Brenda Taylor, Jessica Monroe-Gonin, Kay Worthington and Jennifer Walinga. Hockey visionary Murray Costello was also announced as a builder.

First BRP half-marathon open to the public

The first BRP half-marathon will take place through the streets of Valcourt on Sunday, May 5. Josée Fontaine and Julie Morel, both seasoned runners and BRP employees, put together this initiative to encourage physical activity and healthy eating.

Townshippers receive National Bank bursaries

Bromont’s Billie Derouet and Vincent Blais of Marston were among 36 student athletes selected under the 21st National Bank Bursary Program that shared a total of $120,000 in bursaries at a press conference held in Montreal Tuesday afternoon.
Both athletes received $4,000 bursaries from the National Bank as part of Quebec Foundation for Sports Excellence. The award marked the eighth consecutive year that Derouet has received a National Bank bursary while Blais received his first stipend.

The Champlain Cougars women’s hockey team picked up a silver medal at last weekend’s provincial Division 2 Championship Tournament in Boucherville. The Cougars were shut out, 3-0, by the Lionel-Groulx Nordiques in the championship game on Sunday afternoon.

Mother’s Day Half-Marathon in North Hatley

People who wishing to join the Mother’s Day Half-Marathon in North Hatley, taking place on May 12, have until 6 p.m. Friday, April 11 to benefit from great rates on registration fees. 

As of April 12, registration will increase by $5 and up again by $10 on May 2. This will be the sixth edition of the North Hatley race.
Women and mothers in particular will be honored and Chef Dominic Tremblay from Café Massawippi is preparing a brunch to be served in a tent after the race.

Bishop's University Athletics: Andrews, Chamberland named Gaiter Athletes of the Year

A pair of basketball players, Mike Andrews and Gabrielle Chamberland, took home top honours Tuesday night when Bishop’s University held its annual athletic awards night at the Delta Hotel in Sherbrooke.
Andrews was named Male Athlete of the Year after a stellar season in which he was named a second team all-Canadian, was an RSEQ all-star, the RSEQ defensive player of the year, and the RSEQ player of the year. The third-year education student also won the Michel Fontaine Trophy as the most improved men’s basketball player.

Alexander Galt Regional High School Athletics: Gagnon and Giddings named Piper Athletes of the Month

Claudia Gagnon of the senior girls basketball team and Sean Giddings of the junior boys basketball team were named the Piper Athletes of the Month for March.
Gagnon is a Grade 10 student who helped her team win the ETIAC Championship as well as the prestigious AAESQ Provincial Championship for the first time since 1990. The 15-year-old also led her team to a bronze medal in the RSEQ AA league.
