Spartans move up on NHL draft list

A pair of Stanstead College hockey players has moved up in the final North American Central Scouting list for the 2013 June’s National Hockey List draft. The NHL’s final list prior to next month’s draft was released last week and both Alexandre Coulombe and Nicolas Beaudin improved their positioning from the previous midterm rankings during the winter. The teammates are in their senior year at Stanstead College and recently completed their scholastic careers in impressive fashion.

Magog runner wins Vermont’s Dandelion Run

Canadian marathoner Christian Vachon of Magog won the 13.1-mile individual event of the fifth annual Dandelion Run with a time of 1.19.23, besting his 2012 win in that event by five minutes. There were 281 runners participating out of 325 registered according to Phil White, event coordinator.
Chris Chichester and Russell Primeau, both of Newport, Vt., placed second and third respectively.

Former Bishop’s standout: Blackwell named to Canada Basketball Hall of Fame

Former Bishop’s University great Andrea Blackwell has been elected to the Canada Basketball Hall of Fame. The longtime National Team player and Olympian joined Bill Coulthard and Candace Jirik as members of the 2013 class.

Big fourth inning propels Expos to 7-1 win in home opener

A four-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning keyed the Sherbrooke Expos to a 7-1 win over the Montreal Orioles in their home opener on Sunday night at the AmedĂ©e Roy Stadium. The win, combined with the Expos’ 8-6 come-from-behind win on Friday in Thetford Mines, gives Sherbrooke a 2-0 record to start the year.
With the two season-opening wins, new manager Steve Oleschuk was ebullient after the game.
“I’m very happy to have a club that’s this fun to manage. It makes it looks like an easy job. I’ve got some horses on this team. We’re going to be hard to beat.”

Chefs de Mission hand the Canada Games Committee a good report card

The chefs de mission have been hard at work. Hailing from the 13 Canadian provinces and territories, the chefs de mission took a good, long look at the Sherbrooke Canada Games venues and sites. They evaluated the organization and planning along the way on their trip to Sherbrooke, which took place from May 13 to May 16.
The first trip to Quebec to ensure the planning stage was effected in May 2012 by the chefs de mission.

A Runner's Mind: Mark Spicoluk sets the bar high musically and athletically

Mark Spicoluk is a big man in the Canadian music scene, and I don’t mean physically. The slim and athletic 33-year-old is already an industry whiz, not only as a musician, producer and writer but also for having an eye for talent when he sees it. Indeed, he’s been consumed by music ever since he can remember, notably having worked recently for Universal Music Canada and Gene Simmons’ new record label.
Amazingly, for the past 17 years he’s also followed a dedicated fitness regime.

After a delay, Opening Day finally here for Sherbrooke Expos

Spring has finally arrived in Sherbrooke, albeit five days later than scheduled, with the opening of the Sherbrooke Expos season this weekend. The Expos will open their 2013 Quebec Senior Elite Baseball League campaign on Friday night as they visit the Thetford Mines Blue Sox. First pitch against the defending league champions is set for 8 p.m.
The Expos’ home opener is set for Sunday evening, as they host the Montreal Orioles at 7 p.m. at the AmedĂ©e Roy stadium.

Sherbrooke Silent Ride braves the rain

More than 125 enthusiastic cyclists braved the rain to ride in silence through the streets of Sherbrooke, to the Marché de la Gare as part of the Ride of Silence commemorating cycling deaths. Sherbrooke municipal Councillor and Sherbrooke Transit Society President Marc Denault gave a short speech after cycling the full 10-kilometre course in the pouring rain.

Sherbrooke native Simon Lemire is hard at work preparing to make it to the Sherbrooke Canada Summer Games.
Born in Sherbrooke but currently living in Montreal, 16-year-old Lemire is working with l’AcadĂ©mie de l’Impact de MontrĂ©al.
Soccer seems to run in his blood. Ever since the age of five years old, Lemire loves soccer.
“I didn’t choose soccer, it chose me,” says Lemire.

RSEQ, Radio-Canada announce TV schedule

Local university football fans will once again have an opportunity to follow their favourite teams on TV this coming season on Radio-Canada as RSEQ announced earlier this week that it signed a two-year agreement with the broadcaster for nationally televised games. ‹‹Radio-Canada will provide live coast-to-coast coverage of nine regular season games as well as a pair of post-season games including the Dunsmore Cup. Live broadcasts will begin on Saturday, August 31.
