Gear-McBride fondly remembers Canada Games gold medal

Lori Gear McBride has fond memories about the 1993 Canada Games in which she played a pivotal role in Quebec’s gold medal performance in women’s basketball.
“It was great,” the Lennoxville native said in an exclusive interview earlier this week. “The Games were in Kamloops, B.C. Earlier that year I played on the Canadian Student Team and a lot of our teammates were playing for other provincials, so there was a healthy rivalry. We won gold and it was a big thing.”

Excitement mingled with nervousness was in the summery air on the night of Friday, June 14, and well into Father’s Day weekend.
Shouts of “Let’s go Sarah!” or “Come on, Guillaume!” were scarcely audible among the general frenzy that took place at the track and field stands of the University of Sherbrooke.
This competition reunited 1,000 athletes fitting into the Benjamin, Open, Paralympic and Special Olympic categories. Some of the athletes wished to compete for the Sherbrooke Canada Games, while others were being qualified for different games and competitions altogether.

Canada Games: Nicolas Racine off to the Games

It was on Sunday, June 9 that Nicolas Racine heard the good news that he has effectively has qualified for the Sherbrooke Games in August.
“It feels really good,” says the canoe-kayak athlete with an audible sigh of relief. “I had to go up to Quebec for the qualifying races, and I came in second at the 200-metre race and sixth at the 1,000-metre race. So I qualify for the Games,” explains Racine over the phone.

BRP Cascades tournament tees off Wednesday

The 16th annual BRP Cascades golf tournament kicks off this Wednesday at the Venise Golf Club. The tournament aims to raise funds for the CHUS Foundation.
At 9:30 a.m., 180 golfers, including José Boisjoli, president of BRP and Alain Lemaire, executive chairman of Cascades, will tee off hoping to surpass last year’s take of $1,526,877.

Canada Games: Edson Warner — showing passion for sport

Edson Warner, Olympian and recently inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame, is volunteering for the Sherbrooke Canada Games.
Warner, clad in a tailored blue suit, was open to talking about his vast experience with the Olympics and with Canada Games in general.
Meeting up at the Canada Games headquarters, Warner took a nostalgic look back at his past.

Phoenix to open sophomore season on the road

The Sherbrooke Phoenix will open their second season with a visit to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Friday, September 13, according to the full 2013-14 schedule released by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Monday afternoon.
The first home game for the Phoenix will come one week later, on September 20, also against the Armada.

Sherbrooke Expos split weekend, have busy long weekend ahead

The Sherbrooke Expos split a pair of games last weekend, as they downed the Acton Vale Castors 5-3 on Thursday night at the Amédée Roy stadium, but suffered a 10-3 road loss to the Granby Guerriers the following night.
The split leaves the Expos with a 6-1 record, atop the tight Quebec Senior Elite Baseball League East Division, two-and-a-half games ahead of Thetford Mines, three up on Coaticook and three-and-a-half ahead of fourth-place Victoriaville.

The Sherbrooke Extreme head to second place Windsor on Friday riding a two-game winning streak, after a pair of narrow road victories last weekend. Sherbrooke held off a late Mauricie comeback attempt to win 12-10 last Friday, and followed that up with an exciting 11-10 overtime win over the Magog Memphrés.

Canada Games Volunteers: Derek Trott: The sports equipment man

Derek Trott is the sports equipment man for the Games. Having volunteered as a gold volunteer (meaning you dedicate your time both before and during the Games), Turcott has worked in the realm of sports for more than 11 years.
“I coached Les Verts, a soccer team based in Sherbrooke, for 11 years, and also functioned as president of Les Verts for a while,” explains Trott.
Trott works at a plant where environmental packaging, plant and erosion control takes center stage. “It’s a good job,” says Trott with a slight shrug of the shoulders.
