‘The numbers are off’

January 9, 2012

Borough president David Price said he did not know for sure what system the Quebec Institute used to estimate the population of the area and expressed his belief that their methods may have been flawed, something he said the borough has encountered in the past. Photo: Record Archives

The provincial decree on the population of Quebec for 2012, which stated that Lennoxville’s population shrunk by 469 residents in 2011, is simply inaccurate according to borough president David Price.
According to Price the decree, which is based on estimations by the Quebec Institute of Statistics, presents information that does not correspond to the reality of the borough.
“They’re completely wrong. We have no way of verifying it but we know the population has gone up in Lennoxville. We know because we have new buildings going up, new houses,” Price said. “Try and find an empty apartment in Lennoxville; right now we know there’s a demand for 75 new apartments.”
While admitting that Lennoxville, as with most cities in the Eastern Townships, struggled to keep young people from moving away to bigger cities, Price said that the borough had actually been fairly successful in doing just that recently.
