Hard times for tourism industry E-mail

“A difficult year, but not catastrophic.”
That is how the Eastern Townships Tourism association characterized the past year’s tourist activity. For a number of reasons, 2009 saw the Eastern Townships have to deal with about $15 million in lost revenue. Area hotels and lodgings took a major hit this year, losing $3 million in comparison to 2008. The area benefits from $450 million in annual sales, meaning that this year’s losses are only 6 percent of the total revenue. While it is not crippling, the lost money is still significant.

Le Baron bingo blunder E-mail

The Société des Bingos du Québec (SBQ) has suspended indefinitely the network-bingo game at Le Baron bingo hall due to the owner’s violation of SBQ regulations. The groups most affected by this decision are the local non-profit organizations that are supposed to receive all of the network-bingo profits.

One tricky trial E-mail

It is a trial without precedent in Quebec. With well over 100 defendants accused of murder, drug trafficking and gangsterism over a two-decade period, logistical issues are plaguing the preparation of the Operation SharQc trials.
The trials are the result of the April 2009 raid of Hell’s Angels bunkers across the province, New Brunswick, and abroad, that targeted some 150 people – including many “full-patch” members – and led to 133 arrests.

Bridge details announced E-mail

The City of Sherbrooke website recently published answers to 20 burning questions about the Montcalm Bridge closure scheduled to take place later this year. From March 1 to November 30, the much-used bridge will be completely closed off from traffic while it undergoes reconstruction.
