According to a publication by the Quebec Ministry of Finance on demographics, the government anticipates that the province’s population will expand to 8.6 million by 2025. The study, entitled Horizon 2025, also says that Quebec’s population is getting older and the number of deaths annually will eventually surpass the birth rate. This means that while the population will continue to grow over the next 15 years, that rate of growth is decreasing. |

A family gathering in Sutton turned deadly on Christmas Day. 28-year-old Benjamin Moynan has passed away after being stabbed at a residence on Bullock Road just before 11 p.m on December 25th. Moynan was quickly rushed to a Cowansville hospital where he died from his injuries. A 21-year-old man, the victim’s brother-in-law, was arrested at the scene in connection to the incident. “We are just beginning our investigation,” said Gregory Gomez del Prado, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, in a report shortly after the arrest. “We will examine the crime scene. (Our) criminal investigators will survey the scene in collaboration with judicial technicians to determine exactly what happened. Witnesses will also be spoken with. There were lots of people present at the time of the attack.” Reports indicate that four other people witnessed the alleged attack by the husband of Moynan’s sister. According to a report from over the weekend, all of the witnesses underwent lengthy police interrogations. In an interview with The Record, officer del Prado indicated that the suspect appeared in a court on Monday and was charged with second-degree murder. A recent report in the Montreal Gazette indicated that the Sutton homicide was the latest of five stabbing incidents that took place in Southern Quebec during last week’s Christmas holidays. The four victims in the other cases survived their attacks. By Doug McCooeye 2009-12-29 |
