The city of Sherbrooke is going to be keeping a closer eye on the water quality in Lac des Nations after the Eastern Townships’ public health authority determined that the lake may contain hazardous levels of E coli and other similar bacteria. Out of concern for public health, the city will be implementing the same sampling and control measures already in place at Lucien Blanchard Park’s municipal beach, including the possibility of banning water activities after a heavy rainfall.
“There are a lot of microorganisms in Lac des Nations, but we expect that because it is a natural waterway,” said Dr. Isabelle Samson, Public Health and Preventative Medicine specialist with Public Health Estrie. “The question is, are there enough that it could create health risks? Our conclusion was yes.”
