A three-goal second period led the Val d’Or Foreurs to a 5-2 win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix in QMJHL preseason action at the Palais des Sports on Thursday night. The Foreurs overcame a 1-0 first-period deficit to pick up their second win in the preseason. The Phoenix, meanwhile, dropped to 3-2 in preseason play.
Sherbrooke’s Kay Scheweri opened the scoring at 5:18 of the first period, with his first goal of the preason.
The Foreurs took the lead in the second period on two straight goals by Nicolas Aubé-Kubel, at 3:29 and 8:22. A power-play goal by William Gignac five minutes later doubled the visitors’ lead.
Guillaume Gauthier cut the Phoenix deficit to 3-2 a minute later.
The Phoenix were unable to tie the game in the third period, and a power-play marker by Alexis Pépin with 3:35 left gave the Foreurs some insurance. Adam Cheezo’s empty-net goal rounded out the scoring.
Val d’Or’s Etienne Montpetit picked up the win, making 28 saves. Evan Fitzpatrick made 36 saves for Sherbrooke. Val d’Or outshot Sherbrooke 41-30. The Foreurs were 3-for-5 on the power play, while Sherbrooke was 0-for-3.
The Phoenix open the regular season on Friday, Sept. 11 when they host Rouyn-Noranda at 7 p.m.
