The Right Reverend Jordan Cantwell, the elected head of the United Church of Canada, was in Sherbrooke on the weekend to participate in the regular Sunday worship service at Plymouth Trinity United Church. Cantwell delivered the sermon and benediction for the morning service, leading worship in partnership with Reverends Samuel Dansokho and Mead Baldwin, but stayed after to eat lunch and engage in a question and answer period with those in attendance. Elected to her position at a time when her Church is working on a major internal restructuring, Cantwell spoke to the importance of not letting fear get in the way of faith.
“Jesus didn’t say, “come, follow me, and I will help you create the best institution possible. I will help you figure out how to be an awesome bureaucracy.” That doesn’t even come up in the gospels,” the Moderator said to the group of more than 100 who turned out to hear her speak. “It is the church’s role to be a community that lives an alternative version of what the world can be. A vision of love and of inclusion and of hope in the face of whatever life can bring our way.”
