Magog residents will be forced to put their memorization skills to the test in the coming weeks as the municipality of Magog, in collaboration with Canada Post, announced that address and street name changes become official on November 17th.
The change comes about as a result of a referendum, passed in 2004, uniting the former municipalities Canton de Magog, Omerville and Magog under one banner, the municipality of Magog, “The new municipality of Magog was forced to change street names for the safety of the public,” said Vicki May Hamm, municipal councilor for district 5 and president of the toponymy committee. “These steps are necessary in order to avoid confusion with emergency services, deliveries and visitors because some street names appeared two even three times in the same municipality after the merger. We wanted to make sure that public safety was not an issue.” Canada Post joined the initiative in order to make changes to some residential postal codes as well, where some isolated farmlands would have the same area codes as the closest, yet quite distant regions. These proposed changes will affect some 2,500 residents, where 1,044 homes will have a new street name and in some cases, a new number or postal code as well, this not including 1,427 addresses scheduled for a new postal code only.
