Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe was in Sherbrooke last week to garner local support for his party’s private member’s bill, which he says will help families come through personal tragedy without having to worry about finances.

Compton-Stanstead MP France Bonsant first presented Bill C-343 in the House of Commons last month, pushing for changes to employment legislation so that families of victims – most often victims of crime - can take paid time off from work. “The federal government has to understand that families of victims of a crime need to be able to take the time to mourn and reorganize their lives,” Duceppe said, “all while being assured that they have financial stability and that their jobs are waiting for them when they are ready to return to work.” C-343 looks to amend both the Canadian Labour Code and the Employment Insurance Act so an employee can take a paid leave for family-related reasons, including the disappearance of a child.
