Bringing Train Travel back to the Townships |

A passenger train link between Sherbrooke and Montreal is still a feasible project, says Brome-Missisquoi MP Christian Ouellet. PHOTO: DAVE ANDERSON Headed Christian Ouellet (l), this committee hopes to bring easier travel to the Townships.
The Bloc Quebecois MP, who made a public appeal last year to study the link’s viability, has submitted an action plan to local politicians at all levels of government. Over the past year, Ouellet has initiated discussions with interested stakeholders across the region, who will now all be invited to sit down together at a group forum in August. “By collaborating with all these stakeholders, we should be able to determine how we can offer a train service to people in the region,” Ouellet told The Record. Ouellet has suggested a train link with stops in Farnham, Cowansville, Bromont and Magog – although that is still up for discussion – which would encourage more tourism to the region, in addition to offering a greener alternative for visitors and commuters. Currently, only freight trains make the rail trip between Montreal and Sherbrooke; passenger service between the two cities was discontinued in the early 1990s.
