Gravel pondering call for recount |

Hélène Gravel – the second-place finisher to Renouveau Sherbrookois leader Bernard Sévigny in the Sherbrooke mayoral elections by a mere 122 votes – will announce Thursday morning whether or not she will be asking for a recount.
“I have a team of legal advisors who are analyzing the situation,” said Gravel in a La Tribune article. “I am waiting for their advice before making a final decision.” Recall that Gravel was leading over Sévigny for most of the night on Election Sunday until some of the later polling stations from other districts, including Lennoxville, began coming in. This swung the close margin in favor of Sévigny , who maintained his lead until the final votes had been counted. Gravel’s election team has been under scrutiny in the media since the election for an incident involving her spouse, Dr. Guy Dumont, and TVA Sherbrooke television reporter Marcel Gagnon. Dr. Dumont was caught on camera faking a sneeze and slamming into Gagnon violently with his upper-body. The video was shown on local television and is also up on Youtube. “They are images that I do not want to see,” said Gravel in a French-language newspaper. “I was in another room when the events were taking place. What I’ve heard upsets me. Nothing justifies that kind of attitude from people on my team or my spouse. I find these events distressing. Nothing can excuse them.” According to Isabelle Sauvé, returning officer for the 2009 Sherbrooke Elections, a candidate has four days following an election to request a legal recount with the Quebec Court.By Doug McCooeye 2009-11-04 |
