Be a rock star - Record your own CD E-mail
If your Canadian Idol audition didn’t quite go as planned, but you know deep down that you should have your own album, or if you just want to stick it to Simon Cowell, then maybe a visit to a Waterloo studio to record your very own CD might interest you. Especially since they offer an entire rock star recording experience. “The studio was created initially to give artists a place to help bloom their creativity,” said the Sem1492’s sound technician Julien Fortin. “Now, we wanted to open the doors to regular people, looking for more ways to express themselves. At the same time, they can experience what it’s like to be a recording artist while creating a souvenir of the experience that they can keep forever.”
Included in the recording package, called L’expérience vie d’artiste, is a sound technician, access to musical instruments, special effects, mixing, 10 copies of the CD, as well as lunch and drinks.
“The idea is to give people a day where they can learn about how records are made, and produce their own in a professional environment. It’s kind of like an excursion or outing,” Fortin said.
The package, developed about a year ago, has become very popular according to Fortin, with at least one arrangement sold per month, and he said it is curiosity and the uniqueness of the event that is behind its success.
“We have had people of all ages, grandmothers, children, come in wanting to live the experience, but at the same time, use what they produce as a gift for a birthday, or anniversary. Just last month a woman came in to record music for her husband. Whether the final product is musical or even story-telling or narration, it’s something unique and will never be forgotten,” Fortin said.
The studio opened in September 2000, in Waterloo, and is an active partner within the musical community. They created the SEM Foundation to help struggling artists, as well as helping with recordings for local schools and charitable projects.
“The staff is made up of experts who provide a warm atmosphere and encourage a creative working environment. We want everyone who leaves the studio to feel like a rock star.”
The package costs $350 for a maximum of six people, and must be reserved in advance.
