Dairy farmer defends burning wood, but residents worry about safety

Jean Keurentjes is burning mounds of wood on his recently purchased 200-acre farm in Saint-Armand, Quebec as part of a clean up procedure to revitalize the dilapidated property, and it is beginning to draw looks from the community.
Keurentjes, a dairy farmer, said he has all of the necessary permits from the town and MRC to burn branches, stumps, trees, and other miscellaneous lumber on his land, which he acquired in January. He is aware that the work he is doing could be jarring for residents.
“I fully understand it, and what I tell people is give me two or three years, see what I’m going to do with it. Yes, I know people are not used to it because nothing was happening here for 50, 60 years. If you see my property back home, everything is spick and span,” he said.
