More than 100 Magog residents participated in the city’s virtual public consultation meeting on Tuesday to discuss the distinctive character and style of the downtown area, the height and density of its buildings and the potential for short-term rental sites like Airbnb.
“There were general explanations for everyone and after that citizens were divided into rooms with moderators to exchange thoughts. They were constructive exchanges. Everyone who participated had a chance to express themselves,” said Magog Mayor Nathalie Pelletier.
According to the mayor, it was the most successful public consultation in recent memory. The last consultation brought in roughly 60 participants, she explained, noting that it’s difficult to attract residents to these meetings. Tuesday’s consultation went on for over two hours.
Pelletier told The Record that she was also part of the consultation, as well as every member of city council, and many of the city’s administrative team. But while they were present in each of the discussion rooms, she said they were meant to be observers, not active participants.
