Priceless smiles on the road to Miss Universe Canada

Many young ladies dream of one day becoming Miss Universe Canada. One Eastern Townships girl, Lara Marsh-Mackenzie, is well on her way to turning that dream into a reality. The winner of the Miss Universe Canada pageant will go on to represent Canada in the International Miss Universe competition later this year.
Hundreds of young women entered regional tryouts across Canada competing to be one of 60 national finalists. Marsh-Mackenzie impressed the judges with her charm, poise and most notably her advocacy for cruelty-free living and encouraging others to live a healthy lifestyle.

Chefs de Mission hand the Canada Games Committee a good report card

The chefs de mission have been hard at work. Hailing from the 13 Canadian provinces and territories, the chefs de mission took a good, long look at the Sherbrooke Canada Games venues and sites. They evaluated the organization and planning along the way on their trip to Sherbrooke, which took place from May 13 to May 16.
The first trip to Quebec to ensure the planning stage was effected in May 2012 by the chefs de mission.

After a delay, Opening Day finally here for Sherbrooke Expos

Spring has finally arrived in Sherbrooke, albeit five days later than scheduled, with the opening of the Sherbrooke Expos season this weekend. The Expos will open their 2013 Quebec Senior Elite Baseball League campaign on Friday night as they visit the Thetford Mines Blue Sox. First pitch against the defending league champions is set for 8 p.m.
The Expos’ home opener is set for Sunday evening, as they host the Montreal Orioles at 7 p.m. at the Amedée Roy stadium.

Sherbrooke Silent Ride braves the rain

More than 125 enthusiastic cyclists braved the rain to ride in silence through the streets of Sherbrooke, to the Marché de la Gare as part of the Ride of Silence commemorating cycling deaths. Sherbrooke municipal Councillor and Sherbrooke Transit Society President Marc Denault gave a short speech after cycling the full 10-kilometre course in the pouring rain.

Sutton taxpayers question need for $4-million town hall

Sutton taxpayers are questioning a hastily proposed $4-million town hall renovation on the heels of skyrocketing municipal taxes and escalating operating costs for the town.
The question is not whether or not to renovate - most agree work is required. It’s the scope of the plan and the manner it is being presented that has taxpayers worried.

SES police intervention: ‘Game of the broken telephone’

Students and staff at Sherbrooke Elementary School got a scare Wednesday afternoon as the Sherbrooke Police carried out an investigation in the area around the school. The police were called in after two separate students approached supervisors at lunch-hour saying that they saw a suspicious looking individual near the school. The school’s administration contacted the police and opted to secure the building for the remainder of the afternoon as the SPS carried out their investigation.

Scottish harpist and fiddler visit four countries for Routes to Roots project

Esther Swift and Catriona Price are finishing up their one-month tour in Canada by playing a string of concerts in the Sherbrooke region. Together, the harpist and fiddler make up the innovative modern folk group, Twelfth Day. They will be playing a traditional folk dance in Waterville on tonight (May 17) along with local musicians Nicholas Williams and Alex Kehler. On Saturday, Twelfth Day will play a concert at La Caravane in North Hatley.
