The CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS unveiled a new transportation system for hospitalized adults in situations of intensive or critical care on Tuesday, describing the new technology as “revolutionary.”
“This system will allow for much safer transfers, both for patients and professionals,” said Madeleine Ducharme, Intensive Care Department coordinator, explaining that the new specialized stretcher was developed in-house by a team of healthcare professionals and biomedical engineers.
Dr Marc-André Leclair, medical director of intensive care with the CIUSSS explained that this new system is built from a standard ambulance stretcher but is specifically designed to facilitate the transfer of ICU patients from one hospital to another.
“This is not going to be sent on house calls or emergency response,” Leclair said, underlining the fact that the specialized equipment attached to the stretcher is there to try to ensure continuity of care for patients who are only being moved out of extreme need.
