A unique hiring campaign

A unique hiring campaign

By Nick Fonda
It’s been some time now that businesses and industries, small as well as large, have been posting signs declaring, “Nous embauchons” with ever increasing frequency. The dearth of employees is prompting enterprising employers to use new and creative ploys to entice applicants. A case in point is Mont Sutton’s recruiting campaign launched in mid-May.
“We placed our “Job Quiz” everywhere we could,” says Nadya Baron, who is the Marketing Director at Mont Sutton. “It’s on our web site and in our newsletter. It’s on Facebook and other social media, a well as on several other partners’ web sites.”
Created by a team of people at Mont Sutton, the quiz is set out like a board game on which arrows lead to dozens of black or red squares. The black squares all pose somewhat unusual questions: You do your own oil change? Your middle name is Polar Bear? In Monopoly you always run the bank? The 17 red squares (all arrived at via a black square) are job postings that Mont Sutton is scrambling to fill: outdoor maintenance technician, snowmaking supervisor, cashier.
“We’re looking for a wide range of personnel,” says Nadya, “and we’re very flexible. Full time, part time, seasonal, year-round—we can often be accommodating in terms of work schedule. If we hire a technician to repair mountain bikes in the summer and that person expresses an interest in working year-round, he might move over to the ski shop in the winter to tune skis and adjust bindings. We even have an administrative post to fill that could be done by someone working from home some of the time. If you’re interested in working here, we’ll do all we can to make it happen.”
At one time Sutton was only a ski hill. It was already iconic for its glades, but it was just a ski hill and it lay fallow for much of the year.
“Mont Sutton is now a four-season operation,” says Nadya. “About six years ago we opened our mountain biking trails. Since then, we’ve opened the top of the mountain for camping and more recently we installed zip lines. The chairlift now operates all four seasons. It’s an active place.”
Maintaining an active place is a full-time endeavour.
