Back on the pitch: BU’s men’s rugby team’s championship dream

How does Bishop’s University’s most prolific sports team prepare for the 2019 season? “It’s all about fitness,” said men’s rugby coach Andy Cowell in an interview with The Record. The Gaiters made their way to the RSEQ finals against the Concordia Stingers last year, their first provincial championship performance since 2009. The heartbreaking 22-20 loss serves as a reminder of the high stakes this year, with the Canadian University Rugby Championship being held in Montreal. “Sure, Bishop’s only has 2,300 students so the volume of potential rugby players is smaller than other schools. But the recruits we have are strong and up for the challenge,” asserted Cowell. “This will be a super competitive year. The Canadian University Rugby Championships will be held in Montreal this year, which is an amazing opportunity. It means that two teams from the RSEQ will be able to attend the championships. So, had this been the case last year, we still would have made nationals after our last-minute loss against Concordia.” See full story in the Tuesday, Aug. 27 edition of The Record.
