Having revealed a shortlist of four options for its new name last Monday night, the Asbestos town council announced on Friday that it will be going back to the drawing board. Faced with dissatisfaction and disappointment from the population at the idea of picking between Apalone, Jeffrey, Phénix, and Trois-Lacs, the municipality will be giving a second look to the original list of nearly 1,000 suggestions drawn from the community.
As a result of this decision, the entire process has been put on hold until such time as better options can be made available.
In an interview with The Record last week, town communications manager Stéphanie Girard explained that the choices selected had to be approved by a review committee, the municipal council, and the Provincial authority on naming before being selected for the shortlist. Under its original timeline, the vote on the new name would have taken place from October 14 to the 18, but a notice on the town’s website notes that the plan is now on hold for an “indeterminate” period of time.
