Bibeau champions global migration compact

By Emilie Hackett, Special to the Record – In a recent phone interview, Compton-Stanstead MP and Minister of International Development Marie-Claude Bibeau spoke to The Record to explain the ins and outs of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, currently under review at a UN general assembly in Marrakesh, Morocco. “It is a collaboration agreement. In no way are we abandoning our sovereignty over our borders,” Bibeau said. There are nearly 258 million migrants around the world, including refugees, asylum seekers, foreign workers and students, “and anyone who lives outside of their birth countries,” Bibeau explained. “There are currently 1.3 million Canadian migrants in the world, and it is our duty to protect their rights.” See full story in the Tuesday, Dec. 11 edition of The Record.
