Brome Lake cancels Canada Day celebrations

Just two days beforehand, the Town of Brome Lake made the call to cancel its Canada Day festivities,
choosing instead to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities around the country.
According to the town’s mayor, Richard Burcombe, the council started to mull over the idea of cancelling the patriotic holiday activities in the wake of hundreds of unmarked graves recently discovered outside residential schools in Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
“We believe from our hearts that this is a very important, symbolic gesture towards the tragedies, the unfortunate tragedies still unfolding today, another 182 unmarked graves were found; we must be in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and show our support towards them,” said Burcombe.
