Champlain students send gendered bathrooms down the drain

It’s not every day that people publicly celebrate a bathroom, but that’s exactly what was happening Thursday midday on the third floor of Champlain College in Lennoxville. Following up on a petition that drew hundreds of signatures this past fall, the administration of the college joined the Champlain Student Association and the school’s Sex-Ed peer educator group, who championed the issue, in inaugurating the school’s first gender-neutral washrooms.

“The petition started last fall with the student council, and this is the final result,” said Audrée Levesque, one of the four teachers at the college who work with the Sex-Ed group. “It’s a need, because people who don’t identify as a woman or a man, people who are gender-fluid or transgender, they are experiencing difficulty sometimes.”
