By Emilie Hackett, Special to the Record – Waters Corporation, a world-leading laboratory instrument and software company, has partnered with the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS to open Canada’s first Centre of Innovation for Mass Spectrometry in Sherbrooke. The research conducted by Dr. Christiane Auray-Blais, research professor for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke, and her team in this new Centre will be applied to clinical practice and seeks to improve the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases. Several hundred patients will benefit every year from this new partnership. Mass spectrometry involves the separation of isotopes and molecules in a variety of body fluids that can be collected from patients, such as blood, urine, saliva, cerebrospinal fluid, and more. The mass spectrometers at the CHUS in Auray-Blais’s laboratory will lead to early detection of rare genetic diseases, diagnostic assistance, and personalized monitoring of patients undergoing treatment.
