Climate change activists are calling on Sherbrooke municipal officials to consider the environmental impact of bringing commercial flights into the Eastern Townships.
“I think elected officials need to do their homework and inform themselves about the science and to not only consider the economy in their decisions,” said Louis-Philippe Renaud, a member of the mouvement Urgence Climatique Sherbrooke.
Renaud, as well as a dozen activists, demonstrated outside city hall Thursday afternoon, after the conseil d’administration de la Corporation de développement de l’aéroport de Sherbrooke announced it would present a commercial link project next month.
Renaud said he is baffled by the municipal government’s decision to invest public funds in an initiative that could be detrimental to the environment. He added that he understands there is a need to reinvigorate the local economy, but air travel is not an ideal investment.
