Connaught demolition going ahead

By Gordon Lambie

Demolition work on the old Connaught Home in North Hatley has restarted and should be finished by the end of the week, according to Eric D’Avignon, one of the new owners. Although at the time of the property’s sale in December D’Avignon said he and his partners were looking to complete demolition in time to start construction of a new independent living facility in April, that timeline has now been set back.
“Given that we took two months and we lost another two and a half months to the coronavirus, we now expect to start the work in September,” the owner said, explaining that once the demolition site is cleared and secured, a rental office will be set up on the site for the summer under the oversight of his partner, François Poirier. Although one would think that the new owners would like to make up for lost time by getting to work right away, D’Avignon pointed out that the majority of contractors are currently trying to work through a backlog of work caused by the spring shutdown. That in mind, he argued that it makes more sense to try to get things moving in the fall.
