Jamal Noel scored twice on long kick-off returns and Michael Arruda tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Champlain College Cougars to a convincing 40-23 victory over the F-X Garneau Elans in a CEGEP Division 1 game played at Coulter Field, Friday.
The win allowed the Cougars to remain tied for first place with Campus Notre Dame de Foy. CNDF picked up their fifth win by defeating Limoilou 41-14 while Andre Grasset downed Edouard Montpetit 28-11, Levis-Lauzon stunned Vanier 50-20 and Vieux-Montreal beat Montmorency 24-7.
Noel scored on 106-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and then added a 104-yard return in the third quarter as the Cougars improved their record to 5-0.
Champlain took a 2-0 first quarter lead when the Cougar defence pinned the Elans deep in their own territory and forced Garneau to concede a safety. On the ensuing possession Arruda connected with Marc-Antoine Pivin on a 43-yard reception. Vincent Blanchard rounded out the first quarter scoring with a convert and 40-yard field goal.
The Cougars increased their lead to 12-0 when Arruda tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to Uunda Oboo 5 pass early in the second quarter.
Garneau got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Mathieu Bouchard scored on an one-yard run. Noel restored the Cougars lead on the ensuing kickoff when he raced 106 yards to pay dirt.
Garneau scored the first eight points of the second half on a single on a missed field goal attempt and a 19-yard pass from Joe Hudon to Vincent Gélinas, cutting their deficit to 19-8.
Once again, Noel put a quick end to the Elans’ comeback hopes when he returned the ensuing kickoff 104 yards for his second major of the game. The Cougars put the game out of reached on the first play of the fourth quarter when Guillaume Conraud-Ares threw a 23-yard TD pass.
Garneau scored a late touchdown when Alexandre Morgan-Zoer scored on a 23-yard reception.
The Cougars put their undefeated record this Saturday when they go on the road to play Andre Grasset.
