Drive-thru can and bottle drop-off draws crowds

By Gordon Lambie

Thousands of cans and bottles were returned to the Maxi grocery store on Portland Boulevard in Sherbrooke on Sunday as a part of the chain’s “grand Récupéra-don” can and bottle drive. Hosted at some 40 different locations across the province, the drive offered people who have been holding onto cans and bottles during the isolation period to return pre-sorted bags in exchange for either a change coupon or a donation to a local charity of choice. In the case of the Sherbrooke collection, the charity was local food-security organization La Grande Table, and those who chose to make a donation saw their amount doubled by Maxi.
In the early afternoon cars waiting to make dropoffs doubled back across the parking lot multiple times, and the entire front of the store was a mass of collected cans, bottles, and cases of beer that had been prepared according to the store’s specifications.
