Recent unsolicited deliveries of The Epoch Times, a U.S. based publication that has been criticized for its far right and anti-China stances, have raised concerns among residents of the Eastern Townships.
Ashley Newton, who lives in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Rochelle, received a copy early last week and quickly took to the internet, having neither asked for the publication nor heard much about it.
“I was just very confused by it,” Newton said. “First of all, I was intrigued by the fact that it was in English, seeing as I live in a very francophone village and usually anything that comes to me is in French. Also I know the names of all the English publications around and I had never heard of “The Epoch Times” before.”
Newton son discovered that the mailing had reached most of her friends and neighbours and, upon further inspection, they were troubled by what they read.
“It did not take me long to realize that it was a heavily biased newspaper, having articles that were against certain groups, namely the Chinese Communist Party. It clearly seemed to be propaganda to me and I had no interest in reading any of the articles. I found them extremely absurd and to reiterate, I was even more baffled as to how it appeared in my mailbox. It seemed like something that would have been flagged as inappropriate long before it was put into anyone’s mailbox.”
