Estrie Special Olympics curlers bring home the gold

By Matthew McCully

The Lennoxville Curling Club was full of emotion on Sunday evening as the Estrie Special Olympics curling team members made their way back from the winter games, held in Jonquière, to show off their gold medals.

“This is their fourth experience going,” explained coach Robert Dauplaise, adding it was the team’s first time winning top honours. “It was very emotional winning the gold.”

The team, playing in the strong division, played four matches and was undefeated, Dauplaise said.

The coach credits the great chemistry between the players and all the playing opportunities offered by the Lennoxville Curling Club for the team’s success.

“Roger (Beaudette) and Richard (Labbé) were there right from the beginning, Louis (Duval) was there too,” Dauplaise said.

“Dario (Dubuc) is in his first year, Joel (Boutin Provencher), about a year and a half,” he explained.

With a team that was half experienced curlers and half newcomers, Dauplaise said, “They work well together, they joke together, it’s really nice chemistry that they have.”
