Hydro-Sherbrooke warns of text message fraud

The City of Sherbrooke, its municipal power utility, and the municipal police are warning the population of Sherbrooke and the surrounding area of a new scam being circulated by text message. Although this specific scam is new, it follows a familiar format; a person receives a text message that they are owed a refund by Hydro-Sherbrooke as a result of a billing error. The message includes what appears to be a link to a website, with the instruction that the recipient should follow the link for more information. These messages can be received by anyone, regardless of whether they are a Hydro-Sherbrooke customer or live in Sherbrooke at all. See full story in the Monday, Sept. 9 edition of The Record.
