Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s much anticipated trip to visit the Governor General came on Sunday morning, dissolving parliament triggering an election campaign that is set to conclude on September 20, just over a month from now.
Although election speculation has been ongoing for some time, the idea has been the subject of criticism based on the fact that Canadians will be going to the polls during what is widely accepted to be now be a fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The election will not be the first to take place under such circumstances, however, as the provinces of New Brunswick, Saskatchewan and British Columbia all held general elections in 2020
The news of the election also comes after weeks of almost non-stop funding announcements and regional visits by Members of Parliament and Cabinet Ministers across the country.
