Federal government pauses decision to increase glyphosate residue on Canadian food

On Wednesday, Aug. 4, the federal government announced that any increase in Maximum Residue Levels for glyphosate and 15 other pesticides will be stopped while the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) conducts a review of the Pest Control Products Act (PCPA). The decision was welcomed by groups concerned about the possible changes, such as environmental lobby group Friends of the Earth Canada, who called the decision “long overdue” because there have been no substantive changes to the PCPA since it was approved almost 20 years ago.
To address the concerns of many Canadians, the federal government also announced that $50 million will be invested in Health Canada’s PMRA to advance research and development on pest control.
