Federal penitentiary contraband seizure reports spark curiosity

Among the many feeds coming into The Record’s newsroom are press releases from Correctional Service Canada.

The medium-security facilities in Cowansville and Drummondville have recently reported several seizures of contraband from inmates.

The press releases provide more questions than answers.

Cowansville reported two recent contraband seizures taking place on Aug. 8 and Aug. 13.

According to an Aug. 11 press release sent out by Correctional Services Canada, the Cowansville institution, on Aug. 8, seized items including hashish, a cellphone, and a charging cable. The total estimated institutional value of the items seized was $12,220.

An Aug. 15 release stated that the same institution, on Aug. 13, seized items including hashish, marijuana, cannabis oil, tobacco and a cellphone. The total estimated institutional value of the items seized was $44,450.

Drummondville reported two recent seizures as well, which took place between Aug. 5-9 and Aug. 12-13.

An Aug. 11 release reported that, between Aug. 5-9 in Drummondville, unauthorized items were seized such as hashish, marijuana, tobacco and cellphones with accessories. The total estimated institutional value of the items seized was $197,625.

An Aug. 15 release stated that, on Aug. 12 and 13, at the same place, unauthorized items were seized including methamphetamines, hashish, marijuana, tobacco and cellphones with accessories. The total estimated institutional value of the items seized was $236,950.
