The invasive species known as the zebra mussel has been ripping through lakes and waterways in North America in recent years, with catastrophic consequences for native flora and fauna.

The tiny mussel grows in large colonies that hurt the local ecosystem by attaching to native species of mussels and choking them out. The mussels also harm humans by blocking crucial waterways, pipes, and boating equipment.
