François Cusson, now a former councillor for the town of Abercorn, resigned from the municipal council on Sept. 12 after only 10 months in office due to constant verbal insults from residents and a lack of respect for the democratic process.
In a phone interview, Cusson explained that he had decided to resign just a few hours before the council meeting on Monday. He had discovered roughly four days before the meeting that two Abercorn municipal councillors were ready to step down, as well as Mayor Guy Gravel.
“When you have elected officials who are victims of no respect, it doesn’t make sense to me at all. You can have disagreements. Me and Eric [Bissonnette] sometimes didn’t agree, but we respected each other,” Cusson told The Record, noting the town disrespected democracy.
Bissonnette has been appointed acting mayor until the town can hold an election.
