Four hundred athletes expected for Eastern Canadian Cross-Country Ski Championships

By Matthew McCully

Come snow or sleet, the Bishop’s University Cross-Country Ski Center will be packed this weekend with some of the best skiers from across the country competing in the Eastern Canadian Championships. The event, a joint initiative between the Club de Ski de Fond Orford and Bishop’s University will take place from Friday, Feb. 7 to Sunday, Feb. 9. According to Jean Pinard, vice-president in charge of communications for Club de Ski de Fond Orford, the upcoming championship is one of three different races happening over the weekend. While the Eastern Championship is a chance for skiers to gain classification points to qualify for the national team, the Quebec Cup #3 and Ontario Cup #4 will also take place throughout the weekend, which will include 400 athletes ranging in age from 14 to up to 60 years old in open categories. The ski competition is one of the perks of the newly built ski trail built by Bishop’s. It is one of three in Quebec certified by La fédération internationale de ski (FIS).
