The Régie de police de Memphrémagog (RPM) has noticed a significant increase in fraud cases throughout the Eastern Townships, and Quebec, as scammers continue to target the elderly population.
RPM Lieutenant Carl Pépin told The Record that elderly folk are receiving pressure calls. A scammer will try to convince a victim that their bank account has been compromised, and that the only way to deal with the situation is by handing over their personal information.
“We have two cases in Magog and two more attempts were documented, and while talking to those elderly people, (scammers) are obtaining the PIN of the card and we want to remind the people that no institution will ever ask for your PIN when they contact you by phone,” he said.
