Cameron Hughes has come a long way from his Bishop’s University days, where he is often remembered for wearing a purple cape, a hollowed out watermelon helmet, and pumping up the crowd at Coulter Field whenever the Gaiters football team faced an opponent on home turf.
He didn’t know it at the time, but his antics on the sideline during those games, and in the stands with the rest of the spectators, would eventually turn into a successful career as a sports entertainer. It all started when his roommate asked him to liven up the football games.
“I will never forget it coming back to my house and carving [the watermelon] out and my roommates were like ‘what’s wrong with you?’ and it started my career. I was always a bit crazy in high school but […] it made me realize how to work crowds and how to be fearless,” he said.
Hughes was fresh off a trip to London, where he attended Roger Federer’s final match before his retirement at the Laver Cup, when he spoke to The Record on Wednesday. He was there, as always, to put on a show for the crowd, ripping off a dozen Federer t-shirts in over a minute.
