The Bishop’s University Gaiters football team have been held winless through the first two weeks of the regular season, narrowly losing to both the Mount Allison Mounties and St. Francis Xavier X-Men.
The Gaiters, however, will look to break their early season drought in a matchup against Saint Mary’s University at Coulter Field on Friday evening. It’s a short week for Bishop’s, since they last played on Saturday, so head coach Cherif Nicolas has been focusing on recovery.
It was a hard-fought game against St. Francis Xavier, Nicolas explained, as the Gaiters clawed out of a 21-7 hole after the half, and took a 29-22 lead late in the fourth quarter. But the X-Men charged back, capitalizing on a turnover, and scoring a last-minute, go-ahead touchdown.
“It’s a battle for us, we’ve had some turnovers at some bad moments. Right now in the season, you know, we’re 0-2, but in both of those games with three minutes left in the fourth quarter we’ve struggled and at the end of the day that’s on me,” said Nicolas.
