The Bishops University men’s rugby team will move on to the Quebec university rugby union semifinals after defeating the Sherbrooke Vert et Or 15-7 on Saturday in a quarter-final.
The game started off slowly with both teams being unable to score, there were many attempts at points, but the players could not seem to get the ball into the try zone before giving up a penalty.
With 10 minutes left in the first half Sherbrooke was on the defensive as Bishop’s was putting the pressure. The Gaiters’ Scott Best managed to find a hole and score off a ruck putting Bishop’s in the lead. Tim Nixon made the conversion kick giving Bishop’s seven points, while Sherbrooke had yet to score.
Sherbrooke responded by putting on the pressure and pushed the Gaiters to play a defensive game. After five minutes of constant pressure Sherbrooke’s inside centre punched through the BU backs and score their first try of the game. The conversion kick was made and the first half ended tied, 7-7.
The second half of the game was dominated by Bishop’s, as Robert McGovern scored his first try of the game five minutes into the second half putting the Gaiters in the lead 12-7. Both teams were unable to score another try throughout the game however Nixon took the opportunity to add to the list by making a penalty kick and giving the Gaiters and eight-point lead.
Bishop’s will visit Montreal on Friday at 8 p.m. for the semifinal game.
