Magog has reportedly dealt with a significant amount of gasoline theft since last year, but it appears to be a fairly specific issue developing in the area and not across the province.
On Monday, Radio-Canada noted there has been roughly 130 cases of gas theft at service stations in the area since January 2021, according to the Régie de police de Memphrémagog. The Record was unable to reach a spokesperson from the department for more information.
However, Louis-Philippe Ruel, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), told The Record that there is no evidence of a province-wide, widespread gas theft problem. This type of minor theft happens often, he explained, and it is usually because a customer simply forgot to pay.
