Genealogical Society questions ­secrecy of records

The Eastern Townships Genealogical Society is challenging the Québec government to amend the period of confidentiality of civil registry records. Since its creation in 1994, the Registrar of Civil Status has been the only registrar in Québec. Meanwhile, the act respecting access to documents held by public bodies and the protection of personal information has introduced a 100-year confidentiality periods for birth and marriage certificates.
