Gym owners frustrated after being left out of reopening plans

On Feb. 8, 2021, plenty of “non-essential” business owners rejoiced around Quebec. Shops, boutiques, hair salons, and the like were back in business for the first time since Christmas. Owners of gyms and other fitness centres weren’t so lucky.
“It’s disappointing,” said Jean-Samuel St-Gelais, co-owner of Gym Profil Club in downtown Sherbrooke. His gym has been closed since Estrie entered a red zone in November.
“You see that the aesthetic businesses are open, like the hairdressers, that sort of thing. They are close to each other and they (employee and customer) can touch each other. When we talk about private training with athletes it’s very easy to keep a safe distance and wipe down any machines used,” he said.
