Hardest-hit regions see restrictions loosened next week

In light of improvements in the province, Quebec Premier Francois Legault announced that some of the restrictions in Quebec’s regions of greatest concern will be loosened next week. Specifically he said that elementary schools in the Quebec City and Chaudiere-Appalaches region (except for those in the Beauce) will be able to reopen, and that curfew in Montreal and Laval will go back to 9:30 p.m.
Public health director Dr. Horacio Arruda also announced the first known case of a death linked to blood clotting caused by the AstraZeneca vaccine. While expressing his condolences to the family of the woman in her fifties, Arruda stressed the fact that the death came as a result of known risks and that the risks associated with the coronavirus
The Province of Quebec reported 899 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the total number of people infected to 346,596. The number of active cases dropped to 10,007.
There were 14 new deaths recorded in the province, but the total number of deaths only increased by 12 to 10,898, due to the withdrawal of two deaths not attributable to COVID-19.
The number of hospitalizations and people in intensive care both increased by three, to 667 and 170 respectively.
In the Eastern Townships there were 27 new cases on Tuesday and 391 active cases in total, a decrease from recent highs of over 400. The total number of people in the region who have been infected with covid 19 is now 13,069.
The number of hospitalizations in the region increased by one to 24, but there were no new deaths and the number of people in intensive care remained unchanged at five.
The CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS issued a targeted call for testing on Tuesday to anyone who visited the L’Entre-Gens restaurant in Stornoway between the 19 and the 22 of April. The business has an outbreak currently under observation, but it is not yet clear exactly how many people may have been exposed during the time the initial contagious person was present in the establishment.
The province reported a total of 2,916,897 doses of vaccine administered out of the 3,281,079 doses received in total, increasing the percentage of the population that has received a first dose to 33.7 per cent. In the Eastern Townships vaccination numbers were up to 163,464, or 33.3 per cent of the local population. The Magog area continues to have the Townships’ best vaccine coverage, at 39 per cent, while the Haut-Saint-Francois sits at the other end of the spectrum with 28.7 per cent.
