There are plenty of different traditions that people share in celebration of the new year. For some it’s a family gathering, or a list of resolutions, or partying till the ball drops at midnight. This group of Townshippers likes to bid farewell to the previous year on the ice. For over 40 years now, this gang of hockey lovers has been getting together every Dec.31 for a friendly hockey game in Lennoxville. Started up by Kevin Doherty, the organizational torch was eventually passed on to Eric Mackeage, who has been setting up the game for the last three decades. While the game started out as good old shinny for the fun of it, in recent years the annual game has evolved into a fundraiser. Tuesday’s game raised $830, Mackeage said. This year money will be split evenly between the Bishop’s University women’s hockey team and the seventh floor Oncology Department of the CHUS Fleurimont.
