I Am Greta, a film following the well-known 15-year-old climate activist, Greta Thunberg, will be shown at Cinéma Galaxy Sherbrooke Theatre starting Friday, Oct. 16.
Premiered at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, the film, directed by Nathan Grossman, follows Thunberg, starting in August 2018 when she stops attending school on Fridays, instead striking in front of the Swedish Parliament to fight for climate justice. Her small action snowballed and, within a few months, similar strikes began taking place around the world.
After inciting the world-wide movement, Thunberg, a 15-year-old girl living with Asperger’s Syndrome, became the face of climate justice, and then traveled world-wide to speak at protests in several countries. Avoiding airplanes due to the high carbon emissions, Thunberg opted for trains, boats, and electric cars through her travels.
Grossman, the director, spent time travelling with Thunberg, specifically to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where she was invited to deliver a speech during the Climate Summit. Grossman’s film includes commentary from Thunberg’s parents and never-before-seen footage of the young activist.
The film will be presented in its original version, a mixture of English and Swedish with English subtitles, and a viewing link will be available for critics. On Oct. 30, I Am Greta will be released at Cinema du Parc in Montreal.
